Biopsy Punch - Used to remove dermatological samples for biopsy, the biopsy punch is a hand-held medical tool with a sharp, rounded cutting surface. Sometimes compared to cookie cutters, biopsy punches have a hollow handle through which doctors can view the tissue sample they are removing. Biopsy punches are most often measured at around 10 minutes. 2mm to 8mm.

In addition to biopsy punches, skin and tissue samples can also be obtained by shaving biopsy, which removes only the affected skin area, or excisional biopsy, which removes most of the tissue to be analyzed. Biopsy punching is used to remove a larger test skin sample that is less invasive and produces a clean incision that removes the core sample of skin.

Manners Reduces Penetration for Biopsy Procedures - A major OEM medical consumables company is having problems getting its new version of its biopsy device accepted into the market. It wasn't until after the new product was introduced that it became apparent that device performance was actually inferior to previous devices. Biopsy devices utilize a custom-made needle/introducer to penetrate the surface of the skin and remove a precise amount of suspicious tissue for further laboratory testing. The mechanical design of the device requires a special needle/introducer to penetrate the skin surface and underlying tissue with minimal deflection and tissue damage, thereby facilitating the most accurate positioning for removal of the target tissue sample.

Production of new biopsy devices has shifted to offshore sources in search of lower overall device costs. The OEM did not realize that the critical components of the device would lack the level of precise sharpness required for the biopsy device to function properly.

Using rapid prototyping capabilities, the new production needles were reworked using an alternative tip generation process. The new process includes precision grinding of the needle tip on proprietary/custom CNC sharpening equipment. This new process reduces actual penetration by more than 50 percent !
